Evolution workbench
The evolution workbench is where you help your companion become more itself. You describe what should feel different and set seven dials, one run works it through in the background, and you read the result before anything takes effect. Your companion stays the same person throughout — see what is a companion.
What it is
Section titled “What it is”The workbench is a screen of its own, reached from your companion. It has two inputs and one outcome.
The description is you in plain language: what should change? Personality, behaviour, tone of voice, interests. You can stop there.
The fine-tuning is seven dials, each running between two poles:
| Dial | From | To |
|---|---|---|
| Verbosity | Terse | Elaborate |
| Initiative | Reactive | Proactive |
| Formality | Casual | Formal |
| Tool usage | Sparing | Eager |
| Emotional depth | Matter-of-fact | Empathetic |
| Body language | Minimal | Physical |
| Originality | By the book | Creative |
You can set them yourself, pick a style preset, or write your description and let the app read it and move the dials to match — you then correct what it got wrong.
The run happens once, in the background. The app calls it the Arena while it is going — “Arena is running in the background”, “what the Arena found” — which is the same thing as this page’s run, not a separate mode. It is not a round-by-round conversation you sit through: you hand over a description and seven positions, and a while later a result is waiting for you. What comes back is a new version of your companion’s identity, scored against the criteria your description implies, with a verdict and the changes spelled out.
Why it matters to you
Section titled “Why it matters to you”Editing a personality text field is a one-shot guess: you write, you hope, and you find out over the following week. The workbench closes that loop. The run tests the new version before you ever meet it, tells you how it scored and what specifically changed, and nothing reaches your companion until you accept it.
And it is reversible. A version you don’t like rolls back. That is what makes it safe to try something.
How you use it
Section titled “How you use it”- Open your companion’s Soul space and choose Evolve this companion. There is also an Evolve button in a room’s chat header — you can keep it on permanently, or leave it to appear only when a result is waiting for you.
- Write what should change. Add or adjust the dials, or let the description suggest them.
- Start the run. It works in the background — usually under two minutes — and you can carry on doing something else. You get told when it’s done.
- Read the result: the score, the verdict, what the run found, the changes in detail, and a taste of the new voice.
- Choose. Accept the new version, keep tuning — which drops this result and takes you back to the workbench with your inputs — or roll back to the previous version.
Accepted changes take effect from the next conversation. Earlier versions stay findable in the Soul section.
Limits & edge cases
Section titled “Limits & edge cases”- A run costs 10 Favors from your monthly allowance — the same pot tool calls and mentor sessions draw on. There is no separate per-plan training quota any more. The badge on the screen shows what you have left. See plans & credits.
- One run at a time. You can’t start a second while one is going, and you can’t start a new one while a result is waiting to be accepted or dismissed.
- A run can score worse than what you had. The review says so plainly and recommends rolling back; accepting anyway is your call.
- Sometimes there is nothing to do. If your companion already meets everything your description asked for, the run says so and points at its weakest dial as the place to push next time.
- A failed run costs you nothing. If the run breaks or times out, the Favors are refunded and you can try again.
- Changes aren’t retroactive. Evolution shapes how your companion shows up from here on; it doesn’t rewrite past conversations.
Where next
Section titled “Where next”- Mentor sessions — the other way your companion grows, this one without you in the room.
- What is a companion? — why shaping isn’t the same as programming.
- Meet the Originals — starting points you can then shape.
- Plans & credits — where the Favors come from.
