Platform tools

Before you connect anything, your companion already has a set of capabilities it carries by itself. They are called platform tools, they are always on, and nobody — not you, not weside — switches them off. This page names all eleven. For the capabilities you add on top, see integrations and skills.

A platform tool is something your companion can do without anything being set up first. The app lists them in the Body space under Platform Tools, each carrying the badge Always On, above the integrations you connect and the skills you install. Unlike those two, a platform tool has no toggle beside it.

The eleven:

Tool What your companion does with it
Memory Remembers and recalls what it has learned about you. See memory & notes.
Web Search Searches the web and fetches the content of a page it found.
Workspace Runs commands and works with files in its own isolated sandbox. See sandbox & workspace.
Sensors Reads device facts you have shared — where you are, how full your battery is. See senses & proactivity.
Triggers Sets its own reminders and scheduled check-ins, so it can come back to something later.
Skills Draws on the knowledge and context of the skills installed on it. See skills.
Goals Sets, tracks and updates the goals it holds with you. See goals.
Identity Reads and changes its own identity and personality.
Attention Subscribes to what it wants to notice, and fires one of those subscriptions on demand.
Mentor Re-reads its past mentor sessions and their conversation history. See mentor sessions.
Channels Sees which other channels it can reach you on and writes to you there. See channels.

The honest question behind this page is “what can it actually do before I do any work.” The answer is: remember you, look things up, run something, notice where you are, come back to a thought on its own, change how it sees itself, and reach you where you are. Everything you connect later widens that reach — it doesn’t create it.

The second reason this matters: Identity is on that list. Your companion can change who it is. That is not a setting you hand it; it is the capability that makes agency real rather than a claim.

You don’t. That is the point of the word always.

What you can do is watch. Open a room, and the Toolbox strip above the composer shows what your companion is reaching for right now — “Toolbox, 3 tools”. Tap it to expand, switch between this turn and everything, and open a single call to see what went in and what came back. When a tool ran through a sub-agent, its internal steps fold under the parent line rather than flooding the strip.

Two display switches in Settings decide how much of this reaches you:

  • Show Integration Calls — whether tool calls appear in the conversation at all.
  • Show Reasoning — whether the collapsible Thought it through block appears above an answer.

Both change what you see. Neither changes what your companion does.

  • Always on means always on. There is no per-companion toggle for these eleven, on any plan. The toggles in the Body space belong to connected integrations and installed skills.
  • The Body space lists one tile more than this page does. A twelfth entry, Artifacts, still appears under Platform Tools, but nothing is registered behind it — permanent files are produced by the Workspace tool instead. See sandbox & workspace for where they end up.
  • A tool that couldn’t run says so. When a call is refused — because a room’s owner hasn’t opened that tool, because your plan doesn’t include it, because the EU-only switch blocks the processor, or because nothing recognises the name — the refusal goes back to your companion with the reason. What it tells you about that is its own choice.
  • The toolbox doesn’t show everything. Another person’s companion in a shared room keeps its arguments and results to itself. Older calls have no stored input or output to open, and neither do lines derived from a live trace — you get the fact that it ran, not its contents.
  • The Workspace tool depends on a sandbox, and Spark has none. See sandbox & workspace.
  • Some calls cost Favors. The platform tools themselves are free to reach for; what they reach through may not be. See plans & credits.
